6295 Aumsville Hwy. SE Salem, Oregon 97301-9501 About Us We are Mark and Becky Beier. After years of research and planning, we began this wonderful adventure in Australian Lowline miniature Angus cattle. Several years ago we bought a small ranch near Salem, Oregon. Salem is in the heart of the Willamette Valley, a wonderful agricultural area. Grass and weeds grow fast! We both were raised with a variety of sheep, cattle, other livestock, and animals. We were both anxious and excited about returning to ranching. We researched a variety of animals in order to choose the most efficient and productive. We also wanted something fun that we would enjoy. We believe we have found the perfect animal in the Australian Lowline. We believe strongly that the Australian Lowline breed is superior to other breeds for the many reasons stated throughout this website. We know that the Lowline cattle breed is going to be very popular with many people: small acreage owners; full-time ranchers; hobbyists; breeders; 4-H kids; and many others as well. That is only part of the reason why we were attracted to these animals. They are also fun and fill a large niche that has been lacking until now. In a few years you will see Lowlines everywhere. Why? Because they make sense for most people. What makes Hawk Hill Ranch different? We don’t believe that bigger is better! Many, of the advantages of the Lowlines are due to their size. We firmly believe that Lowlines should stay the smallest beef breed of cattle. Many breeders are trying to make the breed bigger. They are welcome to do this, but they are wrong. Simply there are two common ways to judge a breed of cattle. The most common way it to judge each animal individually, and compare their size and growth rates with other animals of the same breed. These are the animals that win the awards. This practice results in bigger cattle. Bigger cattle means less cattle per acre, stronger fences, more erosion, more difficult handling and the loss of many of the advantages that makes the Lowline breed superior. Nobody gives an award for the most production from an acre of ground, but someone should. Profitability demands that calculations include how many pounds of marketable meat, and other sellable products, can be produced per acre, rather than per animal. It is also necessary to include costs of production in this analysis. Costs of feed, vet care, special handling, pasture damage, fence repair and replacement, and other cost factors need to be factored into any assessment. Australian Lowlines excel in any comparison. Further, we believe that Lowlines are more efficient when they are small in size. The researchers at Trangie proved beyond doubt that smaller is better. Reversing their work would be foolish. Hawk Hill Ranch is dedicated to preserving, and hopefully improving on, the work of the Trangie researchers, by keeping animals sizes small, docile, manageable, and productive. We firmly believe that the future of Lowlines depends on maintaining the same guidelines that resulted in the best beef breed of cattle yet known. We would love to discuss
